The education program, or multidisciplinary studies major, curriculum at TLU challenges students to make connections among content, theory and practice as they construct a knowledge base; become confident of their individual teaching styles through field-based action research; and reflect on and explore contemporary educational principles and practices.

TLU's Educator Preparation Program is accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC). This national accreditation publicly recognizes that the Department produces graduates who are “competent, caring, and qualified professional educators.” The program is also accredited by the Texas Education Agency. To ensure that students meet these standards and earn a baccalaureate degree, they take coursework in (1) liberal arts general education, (2) the content area(s) in which they plan to teach, and (3) educational pedagogy which includes extensive field experiences in public and private schools. The students’ capstone experience is one semester of student teaching.

Students in one of our education programs receive a well-rounded liberal arts education in addition to specialized content coursework, and educational pedagogy including student teaching. Students take additional coursework, a minimum of 90 hours, related to the field in which they plan to teach. Students can choose to teach at the elementary, middle school, secondary or all levels and specialize in core subjects, English language arts and reading, math, science, social studies, biology, history, kinesiology, Spanish or music. All students spend a semester as a student teacher in order to gain invaluable classroom experience before seeking a professional teaching position.

Texas Lutheran University also offers an alternative teacher certification program for those who already possess a bachelor’s degree and wish to shape the minds of future leaders within their chosen field. TLU’s Alternative Teacher Certification Program is authorized by the State Board of Educator Certification and meets all federal standards for an acceptable non-traditional route to certification.

  • Education Preparation Program Admissions Requirements

    Admission to TLU's Educator Preparation Program requires the following:

    Completion of at least one full semester at TLU (unless transferring with an associates degree)

    At least a 2.90 cumulative GPA

    For 4-8 Math or 4-8 Science or 4-8 Math & Science or 7-12 Life Science or 7-12 Math – 15 semester hours successfully completed in certification area

    For all other certification areas – 12 semester hours successfully completed in certification area

    Acceptable score on interview using a rubric

    Basic Skills (assessment taken in the last 5 years)


    • Reading Comprehension 96 points out of 120 points
    • WritePlacer 5 points out of 8 points
    • Arithmetic 84 points out of 120 points

    SAT administered prior to 5 March 2016 * Composite Score = 1070

    • Critical Reading=500 (for reading and writing exemption
    • Math=500 (for math exemption)

    SAT administered after 5 March 2016 *

    • Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW)=480 (for reading and writing exemption)
    • Math=530 (for math exemption)

    ACT Composite Score=23

    • English=19 (for reading and writing exemption)
    • Math = 19 (for math exemption)

    Associates degree or Baccalaureate degree (official transcript required)

  • Educator Preparation Program Use Of Technology

    The following are ways in which we help prepare teachers to “integrate technology effectively into curricula and instruction, including activities consistent with the principles of universal design for learning,” and to “use technology effectively to collect, manage, and analyze data to improve teaching and learning for the purpose of increasing academic achievement.”

    Much of this will be covered in EDUC 272 – Classroom Applications of Technology (see course description below); however, these topics are also explored and taught in multiple courses throughout the program. 

    Examples of other courses include EDUC 373 – Special Populations; EDUC 375 – English as a Second Language; EDUC 378 – General Science Concepts; EDUC 382 – Mathematics for the Child; EDUC 431 – Instructional Strategies; and READ 332 – Foundations of Literacy.

    Teacher candidates will:

    • Develop at least one lesson that utilizes technology in as an instructional strategy. 
    • Investigate and evaluate web sites and educational software/apps in multiple courses.
    • Develop a grade book so that they can learn how to collect, manage, and analyze quantitative data. The data can then be used to guide decisions.
    • Work on developing (fictional) data sets for standardized tests for students to use for organizing data, developing curriculum, and decision making.
    • Understand the use of technology can be equitable, flexible, and help all students build knowledge and lead to an effective and productive learning experience.
    • Understand the principles of universal design for learning.

    Available for use within the department: 30 iPads, a Mimio system, an IPEVO system, and several document cameras. Students have numerous campus-based computers with a variety of software, printing possibilities, and other technological devices.

    EDUC 272 – Classroom Applications of Technology

    This course teaches the selection and application of appropriate technology tools to acquire, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information for diverse applications in daily school practice, including problem-solving instruction, simulation, research, experimentation, record keeping, and assessment. Students will select or develop productivity tools appropriate for enhancing communication and instruction with a variety of audiences, including students, parents, and the general public. Future educators graduate from TLU with more than just a bachelor’s degree—they have a passion for innovation and a strong desire to promote lifelong learning.
