School of Music Events & Performances

Texas Lutheran University's School of Music, located in the Caroline Weston Center for the Performing Arts, hosts many annual events and performances open to the community. From vocal and strings camps to long-running traditions like the Christmas Vespers concert, TLU's music program showcases the talents of current students, faculty, and local children throughout the year.

  • All-State Small School Mixed Choir Workshop

    All-State Small School Mixed Choir Workshop

    Date: September 14, 2019

    The TLU School of Music faculty and staff will host an All-State Small School Mixed Choir Workshop on Saturday, September 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at TLU’s Caroline Weston Center for the Performing Arts. The workshop is designed for small public and private schools up to 4A schools in Texas. The workshop offers the opportunity to work with TLU School of Music faculty and staff in ensemble rehearsals and sectionals in a beautiful new facility and fun environment!

  • TLU Performing Arts Scholarship Invitational

    TLU Performing Arts Scholarship Invitational

    Date: November 2019

    The TLU Performing Arts Scholarship Invitational is for students who are interested in auditioning for a performing arts scholarship award. The event is open to students who plan to major in music or dramatic media as well as non-majors. Music and Theatre scholarships range from $3,000 to $5,000 a year for majors and up to $3,000 a year for non-majors (on top of any academic scholarship awarded).

    The event is held in November and kicks off with a luncheon followed by a faculty-student recital, academic browsing fair, and auditions. Students and their families are also invited to attend workshops on admissions, scholarships, and financial aid. The day ends with a TLU Orchestra concert. For students who are unable to attend the Performing Arts Scholarship Invitational in November, music auditions are also held in the spring.

  • Christmas Vespers

    Christmas Vespers

    Dates: November 30 - December 2, 2018

    Titled “Night of Nights,” this year's Vespers service of word and music will feature the TLU Choir, TLU Treble Choir, Kantorei Chamber Choir, and the TLU Symphonic Winds and Percussion. The music for this service will focus on Advent as a season of preparation for the coming of the Christ child.

  • Viola Day

    Viola Day

    Date: January 12, 2019

    Join the TLU School Of Music and Strings Professor Dr. Eliza Jeffords for a fun and exciting day for violists of all ages and abilities, sponsored by the TLU Viola Studio. Sessions offered will include masterclasses, viola ensemble reading for violists of all ages and abilities, wellness topics for violists, improvisation for violists, and a faculty recital.

  • Spring Choir Tour

    Spring Choir Tour

    Dates: March 28 - April 2, 2019

    Under the direction of Dr. Douglas R. Boyer, director of the TLU School of Music and Choral Activities, the TLU Choirs will present a varied program featuring premiering works, world music, and both sacred and secular pieces on their spring 2019 tour. A message of peace, hope and love fills the Texas Lutheran University Choirs spring tour program, "What the Light Shines Through."

  • ClariNetworks


    Date: April 6, 2019

    Take classes with the pros. Special sessions for directors and bass clarinetists. Concerts, displays, and lunch all included with registration.

    Group Registration Fees: Students are $10/each and directors accompanying school groups can attend free of charge. Individual online registrations are $15. Group registrations are encouraged. Every director who brings a group will receive FREE reeds for their students. Register to win a Buffet Crampon Clarinet and Vandoren Accessory Packages (mouthpieces, ligatures, and reeds) courtesy of Strait Music, High School Music Service, and D'Addario Woodwinds.

  • TLU TBS-KKB Band Festival

    18th Annual TLU TBS-KKB Band Festival

    Dates: May 17-18, 23-24, 2019

    Entry Fee: $325 per band (includes CD recording)


    • Participation Trophy or Outstanding Trophy for all bands
    • Limited Special Recognition – Exceptional Musicianship Trophy

    *Adjudicators will be experienced Texas Music Educators with a broad understanding of levels and expectations with regard to school size and ensemble status.

    Performance Requirements

    • 2 or 3 selections, 25 minutes of music max (longer programs will be allowed as needed with notification before registration)
    • Music need not be on the Prescribed Music List
    • Bands of all levels are welcome, beginners through high school

  • Summer Music Academy

    Summer Music Academy

    Dates: June 23 - 28, 2019

    A student's performance depends on many things, among them, challenging instruction, highly qualified and supportive faculty, a camp culture that builds community, accessible facilities, and opportunities to grow in every dimension. At the Texas Lutheran Summer Music Academy, students will find the ideal conjunction of all these factors and more. The camp is conveniently contained within the borders and safety of the TLU campus. Seguin is located 35 miles northeast of downtown San Antonio and 50 miles south of Austin. It is easily accessible from any direction via major thoroughfares.

  • Community Music Academy

    Community Music Academy Summer Camps

    Dates: July 15 - 19, 2019

    String Camp Details: A fun-filled musical week with something for everyone! Daily offerings will include learning new pieces in a small-group or orchestra setting, improvisation, rhythm and note reading instruction, music vocabulary and history, performances for students by camp faculty, crafts, games, and a final student performance for parents.

    Vocal Camp Details: All young singers are invited to join us for a week of singing, friendship and fun! Activities will include learning proper vocal technique, performance etiquette, and solfeggio (do, re, mi, etc.) in small groups, and preparing group choral literature together for the final performance. This year’s camp will also focus more on and music-reading skills, including improvising and writing rhythms and melodies. And of course, musical crafts and games.

Why TLU?

The School of Music provides professional training to those who wish to pursue careers in music and music education. 

Students also have the opportunity to enhance their college experience by studying music either from the academic offerings or through ensemble participation (band, choir, orchestra) while pursuing a degree in another field. Students interested in music have several performance opportunities, including the annual Choir Tour and popular Christmas Vespers.
