Congratulations to the Class of 2015
May 12, 2015
On Saturday, May 9, 2015, Texas Lutheran University hosted its 124th annual spring commencement with approximately 200 graduates walking the stage. The ceremony featured guest speaker Al Silva ’78, COO of Labatt Food Service, as well as remarks from TLU President Dr. Stuart Dorsey.
Silva, a native of San Antonio, played basketball for TLU and majored in secondary education. He was named Outstanding Young Graduate in 1991 and received the TLU Distinguished Alumni Award in 2014. Silva is a former member and president of the Alamo Heights ISD Board of Trustees, and in 2006, former Governor Rick Perry appointed Silva a Regent for the University of North Texas (UNT). He was reappointed in 2011 and is the Chairman of the Academic Affairs Committee, a member of the Ad-Hoc Committee and the 21st Commission Committee at UNT.
Dr. Dorsey not only addressed the graduating class as a whole, he acknowledged individuals for their outstanding achievements. One group of seniors Dorsey highlighted were the eight student-veterans graduating in May 2015—the largest group ever to graduate together at TLU. Business major and TLU employee Toi Turner was also recognized. For the past 14 years Turner took one class per semester, slowly working toward her degree.
“Toi has inspired us with her dedication, persistence and positive attitude,” Dorsey said. “This entire class has set a high bar for the class of 2016. It is now time for you all to go out. To the Navy. To hospitals. To Harvard Law School. To the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. To corporate boardrooms and first grade classrooms. You will encounter plenty of challenges and your shares of failures, but you will prevail because you are Bulldogs.”
Along with remarks from Silva and Dr. Dorsey, former Board of Regents Chair, Robin A. Melvin ’79, received an honorary doctorate of humane letters. Melvin holds a B.A. in history from TLU and a J.D. from The University of Texas Austin. As an attorney with Austin-based law firm Graves, Dougherty, Hearon and Moody, her practice focuses on water rights, water supply, and water and sewer utilities issues. She also advises clients on water quality and land-use regulations. From 2008 to 2013, Melvin was listed as one of The Best Lawyers in America® published by Woodward/White, Inc. and she received the TLU Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002.
Special recognitions also included Outstanding Young Alumnus Travis Turner ’10 for his commitment to serving the university and its students. Turner, an assistant athletic trainer for the Houston Texans, was also recognized for hosting groups of TLU students at Reliant Stadium, leading them in technique demonstrations, and acting as a dedicated admissions ambassador for the university.
