April 12, 2011
The Chair of the Texas Lutheran University (TLU) Board of Regents announced today that Dr. Stuart Dorsey has been named TLU’s 15th President. Dr. Dorsey most recently served as President of the University of Redlands in Redlands, California from 2005 to 2010.
“We are delighted that Dr. Dorsey has agreed to serve as TLU’s next President,” said Robin A. Melvin, Board of Regents Chair. “Dr. Dorsey has the experience, energy, and vision to lead TLU into a new era of growth and recognition.”
“It is both a privilege and solemn responsibility to serve as the next president of Texas Lutheran University,” said Dr. Dorsey. “Before coming to campus I felt that my background and experience would be a great fit for TLU. But after only a few hours on campus, Michelle and I knew this was where we wanted to be. Everywhere we looked, we were impressed with the energy, professionalism and optimism of the people we met. Most importantly, everyone is genuinely dedicated to making a difference in students’ lives. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this work and community.”
Richard Fisher, Chair of the Board of Trustees, University of Redlands added: "On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the University of Redlands, I congratulate Texas Lutheran University upon its selection of Dr. Stuart Dorsey as its next president, and also congratulate Stuart and Michelle and offer them our very best wishes in this new endeavor. Stuart was a dedicated and very able president during his years at Redlands, leading the U of R through completion of its successful Centennial Campaign, the development and adoption of its Strategic Plan, and the development of its successful Fiscal Stabilization Plan. Stuart and his graceful wife Michelle were genuinely well-liked on campus and in the community. As they move to this exciting new challenge and opportunity, they take with them the thanks and best wishes of the University of Redlands."
Before serving as the President at Redlands, Dr. Dorsey was the vice president for academic affairs at the University of Evansville in Indiana and vice president and academic dean at Baker University in Kansas. He also held positions as assistant professor of economics at Western Illinois University, associate professor of economics at West Virginia University, the George F. Collins, Jr. professor of business and finance and department chair at Baker University, and visiting professor at Harlaxton College in Grantham, England.
In addition to his service as a college administrator and professor, Dr. Dorsey worked as an applied economist in the federal government early in his career. He was a research economist with the U.S. Department of Labor before being appointed as chief economist for the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance. At the Finance Committee under its Chairman, former Sen. Robert Dole, R-Kan., Dr. Dorsey worked on a wide range of policy issues including the federal deficit, Social Security, Medicare, and reform of the tax code “Pretty clearly, we didn’t solve all of those issues, but it was a tremendous privilege and learning experience for a young economist,” Dr. Dorsey recalls.
Dr. Dorsey holds a B.S.B.A in economics from the University of South Dakota, and an A.M. and Ph.D. in economics from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. Dr. Dorsey and his wife Michelle are proud parents to five grown children, including two in college. The Dorseys are active members of the communities where they live and look forward to being involved in Seguin and its neighboring communities.
