TLU Establishes Elisa Marie Suarez Endowed Scholarship

January 11, 2011

Texas Lutheran University (TLU) announced today that it has established a $50,000 endowed scholarship in memory of TLU student Elisa Marie Suarez. “It is hoped that this award will help the recipients pursue their academic and athletic goals, while embodying Elisa’s characteristics as a hardworking student-athlete, and a loyal and loving friend and family member,” said Elisa’s parents Arturo and Sylvia Suarez. The first recipient of the Elisa Marie Suarez Endowed Scholarship is Gennie Flores, a math major who is currently a freshman at TLU.

“Elisa excelled at TLU as a gifted student and a talented athlete,” said Steve Anderson, Senior Vice President for TLU. “We believe the endowed scholarship created in her memory is a wonderful way to honor Elisa while benefiting another student who exemplifies Elisa’s talents and caring spirit.”

Elisa was the youngest daughter in the Suarez family, and the sister of Celina Suarez, Marina Suarez, and Bettina Suarez. A gifted athlete, honor student, loving daughter, and loyal friend, Elisa graduated in the top 10 percentile in the class of 2003 at John Marshall High School in San Antonio, Texas, and continued to excel academically and athletically at TLU in Seguin.

While at TLU, she earned a position on the Dean’s list while also helping the TLU cross country team bring home the 2003 American Southwest Conference Championship. In addition to her many accomplishments as an honor student and athlete, Elisa’s friends cite her as the quintessential example of altruism, always selflessly extending a hand to help others. As one friend said, “She was the kind of person we all strive to be.” Whether she was offering a helping hand, a kind word, or an extra push, Elisa believed in humanity as much as she believed in herself.

Elisa was studying mathematics and planned to pursue a career in coaching. She was often found tutoring math to her fellow TLU classmates. Her radiant smile and eyes alone could light up a room, hence the nickname “Sunshine” given to her by her fellow TLU cross country runners. The compassion she showed for others was exuded in every laugh, conversation or brief connection that Elisa made. Friends and family agree that Elisa will be remembered by all those who knew her, no matter how briefly, as an amazing person with endless possibilities.

The Elisa Marie Suarez Endowed Scholarship award will be given on an annual basis to a Hispanic female who is majoring in math. For more information about the scholarship please contact the TLU Development office at 830-372-8030 or email
