TLU Hosts Water to Thrive Dinner Benefiting Ethiopia

March 31, 2011

The Texas Lutheran University (TLU) Jon and Sandra Moline Center for Servant Leadership will host a Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction to raise funds for Water to Thrive, a faith-based organization that constructs water wells in rural Ethiopia. The event will feature Ethiopian cuisine, on Tuesday, April 12, starting at 5 p.m. at Mosaic Community Church (1201 Court Street). The event will also feature a Silent Auction where guests will have the opportunity to bid on items such as a personal spa package, various gift certificates for restaurants and entertainment.

Knowing that one in 10 Ethiopian children die of water-borne illnesses, students have set a goal of raising $5,000 to construct a new well in a rural community. Wako Bungula, a sophomore math and physics major, is from Ethiopia and his family will help prepare authentic cuisine for the event. “I grew up witnessing the struggle that people of Ethiopia have getting water, whether clean or not,” Bungula said. “I can't be quiet about this problem that I am aware of its existence. I want to help.”

“Throughout the last few years I have been supporting and promoting Water To Thrive through school research projects, church, and gatherings. After hearing about the living conditions of the people in rural Ethiopia, I could not stop thinking about how much I, myself, depend on water. It is a basic human right, and should be accessible to all, and I think Water To Thrive has the solution.” –Elisa Wellnitz, Freshman Elementry Education major and Theology minor

"Water is something we take for granted every time we turn on a faucet. If there are people in another country that struggle to access clean water, why not put effort in helping them?" –Amy Lees, Freshman Biology major

Tickets cost $15 and can be obtained by calling the Center for Servant Leadership at 830-372-8160 or contacting This event is open to the public.
